Week 1: Day 3: Introduction to Self-Perception

September 4, 2023 By MinnieBarker

How Do You Think Others See You? Self-Perception Theory

Welcome back to Day 3! Today’s lesson holds a special significance; we’ll explore self-perception, a phenomenon that colors not only how you see yourself but how you believe others perceive you. While self-image focuses more on your internal viewpoints, self-perception adds another layer by bringing the external world into the equation. This topic can influence everything from your confidence levels to your social interactions.

Self-Perception Theory:

The framework for today’s exploration is built upon self-perception theory, conceived by psychologist Daryl Bem. This theory postulates that our internal states are not always clear to us. Rather, we often interpret our own actions to infer what we feel or believe, similar to how we’d interpret someone else’s actions to understand their feelings or beliefs. For example, if you notice that you’re reading a lot of self-help books lately, you might conclude that you are keen on personal growth and development.

How Do You Think Others See You?

This is where self-perception gets intriguing. Your notion of how others perceive you can act as a double-edged sword. On one hand, believing that others see you as competent can boost your confidence. On the other hand, the fear of negative perception can inhibit your actions and keep you in a proverbial shell.

Think about social settings. Are you the life of the party because you believe that’s how people expect to see you? Or do you shun public speaking opportunities because you think others might find you boring or uninformed?

Affirmation for Day 3:

“I am more than others’ perception of me. I am the creator of my own reality and the master of my self-image.”
